1. Early Life
Aleksandar Antonov Tonev was born on 3 February 1990, in Elin Pelin, a town located in Sofia Province, Bulgaria. He spent his early childhood there before embarking on his football career.
2. Youth Career
Tonev started his youth football career at a local club, Levski Elin Pelin. He later joined the highly regarded youth academy of CSKA Sofia, one of Bulgaria's most prominent football clubs. His development within the CSKA Sofia youth system laid the foundation for his professional career.
3. Club Career
Aleksandar Tonev's professional club career spanned over a decade, taking him to several leagues across Europe, including Bulgaria, Poland, England, Scotland, and Italy. He was known for his versatility as a winger and his attacking prowess.
3.1. CSKA Sofia
Tonev made his first-team debut for CSKA Sofia on 8 March 2008, in a 3-1 league victory against Belasitsa Petrich. He came on as a substitute for Chigozie Udoji. Following the departure of many key players in the summer of 2008, Tonev received more opportunities in the CSKA first team. He played in the club's opening fixture of the 2008-09 season against Litex Lovech on 3 August 2008, a match which CSKA Sofia won, securing the Bulgarian Supercup.
Under the new head coach Lyuboslav Penev, Tonev saw increased playing time, often coming off the bench. On 22 April 2009, he scored his first two goals for the club, netting a brace in a 4-1 away win over Vihren Sandanski. For the 2009-10 season, Tonev was loaned to OFC Sliven 2000, where he gained more regular playing experience. He was recalled to CSKA Sofia for the 2010-11 season, continuing to contribute to the team.

3.2. Lech Poznań
On 16 June 2011, Tonev moved to Poland, signing with Ekstraklasa club Lech Poznań. He made his debut on 29 July 2011, entering the game in the 75th minute as a substitute for Jakub Wilk in a dominant 5-0 victory against ŁKS Łódź.
Tonev scored his first European goal on 26 July 2012, netting the decisive goal in a 1-0 home win over Azerbaijani club Khazar Lankaran during the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. On 25 August, he scored his first Ekstraklasa goal of the 2012-13 season with a powerful 25-yard winning strike in a 2-1 away victory against Polonia Warsaw. In his second season with the club, Tonev played a significant role in helping Lech Poznań secure a runners-up position in the league.

3.3. Aston Villa
On 7 June 2013, Tonev completed a transfer to Premier League club Aston Villa, becoming their first signing of the pre-season. His move to Villa was reportedly recommended by his former international teammate Stiliyan Petrov, who was then a development coach at the club. Tonev made his debut for Aston Villa on 13 August, coming on as a substitute for Karim El Ahmadi in the final eight minutes of a 2-1 away defeat to Chelsea. He went on to make 17 Premier League appearances during the 2013-14 season.
3.4. Celtic
On 11 August 2014, Tonev moved to Scottish champions Celtic on a season-long loan deal, which included an option for a permanent transfer. He made his debut for Celtic on 13 September, starting in a 2-1 home win against Aberdeen.
During this match, Aberdeen full-back Shay Logan accused Tonev of having racially abused him. Tonev vehemently denied these allegations. However, on 30 October 2014, the Scottish Football Association (SFA) found Tonev guilty of "using abusive language of a racist nature" and issued him a seven-match ban. Celtic confirmed their intention to appeal the decision, expressing their belief in Tonev's innocence. Despite the appeal, the initial ruling was upheld, and Celtic ultimately decided not to pursue the matter further. Following the ban, Tonev's playing opportunities at Celtic diminished.
3.5. Frosinone
On 27 August 2015, Tonev joined Serie A newcomers Frosinone on a permanent deal following his departure from Aston Villa. He played his first match for the Italian club three days later, coming on as a substitute for Luca Paganini in a 2-0 loss against Atalanta at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia. He contributed to Frosinone during his single season with the club.
3.6. Crotone
On 16 July 2016, Tonev transferred to another Serie A club, Crotone. He scored his first goal for the club on 7 May 2017, which was the lone goal in a 1-0 away victory over Pescara. He remained with Crotone until 12 February 2018, when his contract was mutually terminated.
3.7. Botev Plovdiv
After his departure from Crotone, Tonev returned to Bulgarian football, joining Botev Plovdiv. He played for the club during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, making a total of 32 league appearances and scoring 2 goals. His tenure at Botev Plovdiv marked his final years in professional football.

Tonev began his international career with the Bulgaria U-19 squad, making 5 appearances. He later progressed to the Bulgaria U-21 team, earning 15 caps. On 4 September 2009, he scored his first goal for the U-21 team in a 3-0 home victory against Kazakhstan U21 in a UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship qualifier. Five days later, on 9 September 2009, he was sent off in the 90th minute of a 1-2 away loss to Sweden U21 for a dangerous tackle on Guillermo Molins. He also scored a goal in a friendly match against Cameroon on 9 February 2011.
4.2. Senior National Team
Tonev made his debut for the Bulgaria senior national team on 11 October 2011, in a 0-1 home loss against Wales. On 22 March 2013, he achieved a career milestone by scoring his first international goals, netting a hat-trick during a comprehensive 6-0 home win over Malta in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match.
Three years and a week later, on 29 March 2016, he scored his first international goal since the hat-trick, contributing to a 2-0 victory over neighboring Macedonia in Skopje. His fifth and final international goal came on 6 September 2016, in a dramatic 4-3 home win against Luxembourg during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In total, Tonev earned 29 caps for the senior national team.

5. Retirement
Aleksandar Tonev announced his retirement from professional football in March 2022. This decision came approximately 20 months after his last official competitive game. Following his retirement, Tonev transitioned into a new career path, starting his own construction business.
