Agnes's life began as a member of the powerful House of Poitiers, leading to her eventual marriage into the royal family of Aragon and Navarre and her tenure as queen consort.
2.1. Early Life and Family
Agnes of Aquitaine was born towards the end of 1072. She was a daughter of William VIII, Duke of Aquitaine, and his third wife, Hildegarde of Burgundy. Agnes was also a half-sister to Agnes, Queen of León and Castile, and she is sometimes thought to be the same historical figure as her half-sister due to the shared name.
2.2. Marriage and Reign as Queen
In 1081, Agnes was formally betrothed to Peter I of Aragon and Navarre, who was the son of Sancho I of Aragon and Navarre. The couple's marriage took place five years later, in 1086, in the city of Jaca. Upon Peter's succession to the thrones of Aragon and Navarre in 1094, Agnes became queen consort. During their marriage, Agnes and Peter had two children, both of whom unfortunately predeceased their father. Their son, Peter of Aragon, died in 1103, and their daughter, Isabella of Aragon, died in 1104.
3. Death
Agnes died on June 6, 1097, after three years as queen consort. Following her death, her husband, Peter I, subsequently remarried to a woman named Bertha of Aragon.
